Memo to men: BEING A DECENT HUMAN BEING DOES NOT GIVE YOU TITTIES.

If you pay attention to conservatives, assholes, or conservative assholes for any length of time, you will hear the term "feminized" used as a pejorative roughly every 24-36 hours. The most recent notable instance, of course, was Brit Hume, on Fox News, in the context of Chris Christie's bridge scandal. In, I might add, one of the rare instances Fox News brought the fucking thing up at all. ACTUAL QUOTE TIME!

"In this sort of feminized atmosphere in which we exist today, guys who are masculine and muscular like that in their private conduct, kind of old-fashioned tough guys, run some risks. Men today have learned the lesson the hard way that if you act like kind of an old-fashioned guy's guy, you're in constant danger of slipping out and saying something that's going to get you in trouble and make you look like a sexist or make you look like you seem thuggish or whatever. That's the atmosphere in which he operates. This guy is very much an old-fashioned masculine, muscular guy, and there are political risks associated with that. Maybe it shouldn’t be, but that’s how it is."

Now, to get at what's important here, we have to overlook a few things. We have to overlook Brit Hume's weird man-crush on Christie and whatever beer goggles led to Hume using the word "muscular". Unless Christie is The Kingpin, I'm not buying it.

We also have to ignore that things that make you "look" sexist are generally sexist things, and things that make you "look" thuggish are generally thuggish things. Or possibly Thuggee things.

But what I want to focus on is the fact that Hume blames evolving societal standards of acceptable behavior on women. I mean, yes, women can take credit for some of it. They eventually fought for and gained enough power in society to demand that people stop treating them like shit, and have been fairly successful at that, to Brit Hume's dismay.

But "thuggish" behavior? Thuggish behavior like ruining the days of schoolchildren in a petty, vindictive act of political revenge? That didn't become shitty because women didn't like it. That didn't become shitty because masculine, muscular guy's guys like Chris Christie and Brit Hume are constantly being attacked and held back by society, only getting to be governors of powerful East Coast states and Fox News pundits.

That was ALWAYS shitty. And when people got away with it, it wasn't because we were letting boys be boys in all their smelly, date-rapey glory. It was because, for the most part, shit that petty stayed local. Or for the same reason abuses of power have gone without consequences throughout history - because the abusers have power.

Brit Hume is, of course, free to blame his shrinking, melty penis on any number of things - strong women, married gay people, Trayvon Martin, whatever. But the real reason is that it's the only part of him still capable of changing in any way.
