Not Like The Other

Memo to Allen West and Fox News: NOOOOOOPE.

Few things in this world are funnier or sadder than the Republican Revenge Scandal. The classic example of RRS is the phrase "Obama's Katrina". See, Bush fucked up Katrina in an epic and singular fashion, and in Republican minds, the only way to redeem him is to pretend that a Democrat did it too. See also the phrase "worse than Watergate".

A quick begoogling shows that Obama has already had at least FOUR Katrinas! The BP oil spill, Hurricane Sandy, military sexual assaults, and, of course, Benghazi. Always Benghazi. Coincidentally, a new poll yesterday showed that 29% of Louisiana Republicans think Obama's Katrina is, well, Katrina, due to their deep, deep stupidity.

Anyway, another right-wing embarassment was the Trayvon Martin case. Sure, George Zimmerman was acquitted, but in the process, the right spewed an effluvia of racism and insensitivity so toxic that people noticed it over their usual background level of toxic effluvium.

Republican rules of face-saving demands they find an equivalent incident that reflects their own point of view. But since that's not a thing that actually happens ever, because the dynamics of power in America simply don't allow it, they had to find something sort of vaguely similar and scream loudly SAME THING SAME THING SAME THING.

So they settled for an incident in Florida where three black kids beat up a 13 year old white kid on a school bus, then got arrested for it and face charges over the beating. Which did not kill the white kid, and was apparently a "snitches get stitches" situation, rather than a "kill whitey" situation.

This situation is, of course, nothing like Trayvon Martin, because being the victim of a crime and being the victim of injustice are two different things. But that didn't stop the right from pretending they're the same, as evidenced by Allen West's recital of the official talking points. ACTUAL QUOTE TIME!

""Do you hear anything from Sharpton, Jackson, NAACP, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, liberal media, or Hollywood? Cat got your tongues or is it that pathetic hypocrisy revealing itself once again? Y'all just make me sick." - West, on Facebook.

People didn't get upset because a white person hurt a black person. They got upset because a white person shot and killed a black person he suspected was a criminal, and the kid wasn't a criminal, he was walking down a public street in a gated community he was an invited guest of, carrying iced tea and Skittles, and then the guy who shot him didn't even get arrested for a month and a half.

Yes, there was a racial component. Yes, civil rights leaders tend to focus on racial injustice. But getting beat up on a bus is not automatically a racial injustice. Even if it was racially motivated, even if it was a hate crime, which it wasn't, it's not an issue of injustice when the perpetrators are immediately arrested, charged, and most likely, convicted.

So people who get involved in things of a certain type aren't hypocrites when they don't get involved in things of a different type. I mean, I understand your collective need to believe otherwise, but we can all see what you're doing. You're not doing sleight of hand when you only play to an audience that refuses to see the coin sticking halfway out of your nose.
